The thing about Salvador Allende is he didn’t arrest a single person for political reasons. All of the democratic institutions of Chile were fully functioning when George H. W. Bush--now, apparently a saint, even to the American left—head of the CIA, backed a military coup d’Etat led by General Augusto Pinochet (with whom my parents were personally acquainted). Nicolas Maduro is no Allende. Venezuelan democratic institutions have collapsed. The prisons are full of Maduro’s opponents. Nicolas Maduro doesn’t deserve to wipe Salvador Allende’s shoes.
Neither does the United States deserve another chance at intervention in Latin America. Maybe Maduro deserves whatever he has coming. But the States has been crying wolf all over the fucking planet, invading whoever for whatever reason, pretty much non-stop since Vietnam. The governments of Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil et al. may back Maduro’s ousting; but that’s because, at the moment, their leaders are all wealthy white dudes from conservative political parties. I cannot imagine that the people of South America will respond well to bloody images of a foreign-backed military coup in a neighbouring country on the screens of their devices. All our journalists cheering a military solution and shaming those who oppose it know nothing about Latin America, its people or its history. They should exercise better judgement because the solution they advocate is as likely to engulf civilization in a new world war as it is to restore “democracy”.
An invasion of Venezuela?
